BCVI and PAHO team up for World Sight Day

Belize Council for the Visually Impaired hosts an Open Day in commemoration of World Sight Day 2009

Belize City, Belize, October 5th, 2009: The Belize Council for the Visually Impaired (BCVI) and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in Belize are teaming up to promote World Sight Day, Thursday 8 October.  The theme this year is “Gender and Eye Health: Equal Access to Care”. Studies consistently indicate that females have a significantly higher risk of being visually impaired than males, in every region of the world, and at all ages; nearly two-thirds of blind people worldwide are women and girls.
BCVI is inviting all Belizeans, especially women and girls, to an Open Day at the National Eye Clinic (NEC) on Princess Margaret Drive next to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) from 9am until 4pm. There will be displays of services as well as free examinations provided by BCVI. Guests can receive free eye testing, discounted glasses, and commemorate the global initiative (plant a tree in honor of World Sight Day) by planting a garden on the grounds.

World Sight Day is an international day of awareness, held annually on the second Thursday of October, to focus attention on the global issue of avoidable blindness and visual impairment. It is the main advocacy event for the prevention of blindness and for "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight", a global initiative for the elimination of avoidable blindness, a joint program of the World Health Organization and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, which has an international membership of NGOs, professional associations, eye care institutions, and corporations.
The BCVI prides itself on its comprehensive eye care program aimed at preventing blindness and restoring vision where possible. Its doctors and staff members work with patients through all the stages of eye diseases, and clinics are located countrywide. Each BCVI office will be taking part in World Sight Day through the media and clinic showcases.
The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization is also part of this global initiative, and works with Member States and public and private partners to prevent blindness and restore sight in every part of the world.  The Organization provides technical cooperation, monitoring, and coordination among partners to strengthen country-level efforts to eliminate avoidable blindness, treat eye diseases, expand access to eye health services, and increase rehabilitation for people with residual visual impairment.
