Belmopan - 05 October, 2009

The Belize Mental Health Programme, Ministry of Health together with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Mental Health Association and Mental Health Consumer Groups, are planning events for the week of October 04 –17, 2009 which commemorates World Mental Health Day, October 10, 2009.

The theme for World Mental Health Day 2009 “Mental Health in Primary Care: Enhancing Treatment and Promoting Mental Health. This year’s theme will address the continuing need to “make mental health issues a global priority”, and will stress the all too-often neglected fact that mental health is an integral element of every individual’s overall health and well-being. Mental illnesses do not choose their victims; they occur in all cultures and at all stages of the life span. Mental illnesses have a major impact on the physical health of people living with them.

The theme is intended to draw worldwide attention to the growing body of information and knowledge focusing on the integration of mental health in primary healthcare, and to provide this information to grassroots patient/consumer, family ember/caregiver, and advocacy and educational mental health associations around the world. This is a significant trend in shifting mental health diagnosis, treatment and care from the traditional separate but unequal mental health services delivery system into mainstream healthcare.

In each district the Mental Health Clinic, headed by the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners will be celebrating World Mental Health Week with a variety of activities such as:

•Radio talks•Church Services•Lectures for Primary Health Care Providers•Open day at the Palm Center in Belmopan and other mental health clinics in the districts•Feed the homeless psychiatric patients•High School debate in all districts•Annual Balloon lift off•Banquet at Chateau Caribbean, Belize City
The programmes and activities planned to commemorate World Mental Health Day will help bring attention to the general public and medical communities for the need to address all aspects of health and the complete treatment of co-occurring disorders.

According to the Mental Health Programme of the Ministry, World Mental Health Day is an important event in our community because it helps all of our fellow citizens to learn more about mental health issues and encourages them to support improved services regarding full body health and co-occurring disorders. The Ministry of Health urges everyone to participate in this year’s World Mental Health Day events.
