9 July 2010 - Since the start of this year, the Ministry of Health has received 348 reports of clinical cases of Classical Dengue Fever, 30 of which have been laboratory confirmed at the Central Medical Laboratory and 42 diagnosed as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever. The majority of these cases have been identified in the Cayo (142 cases) and Belize districts (167 cases).

Report on World Health Day 2010, Belize City

World Health Day was celebrated in Belize City with the launching of a park and health fair coordinated by the Belize City Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) on Wednesday April 7, 2010.

In keeping with the theme for World Health Day, “Urban Health Matters”, and the 1000 Cities, 1000 Lives initiative, the Belize City Council, among other initiatives, has decided on a campaign to renovate parks around the city in order to encourage citizens to utilize them for physical activity and other health promoting activities.

Hispano-American and Inter-American Contest of Best Practices in Urbanization and Health

On 7 April, PAHO will celebrate World Health Day under the theme of Urbanization and Health. As part of this celebration, PAHO is launching the I Hispano-American and Inter-American Contest of Best Practices in Urbanization and Health.

Active ImageThe Call for Submissions will be open from 10 February to 19 March, 2010. We kindly request your collaboration in sharing this announcement with other social, governmental, non-governmental and private groups and institutions that are involved in projects and initiatives that contribute to urban health and encourage them to participate in the contest.

 We also request that this announcement be disseminated as much as possible since our goal is to have at least one Best Practice experience entry per each one of the main cities in the region.  Five of the Best Practices in Urbanization and Health will be awarded a prize and we hope that one of them is presented by you.

World Health Day 2010

Active ImageBelmopan. April 1, 2010. “Urbanization and Health” is the theme for World Health Day 2010. Its commemoration will provide an opportunity to focus on the many health challenges related to water, environment, sanitation, violence and injury, non-communicable diseases and their risk factors including tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical activity, harmful use of alcohol as well as the risks associated with diseases outbreaks in cities and towns.

Identifying needs in Haiti

Monday, February 8, 2010.  Shelter assistance remains an urgent priority in Haiti. Four sites have been identified as official planned settlements for more than 5,000 people but more suitable sites are needed. An additional 56 assessed sites could, pending available resources and Government approval, host at least 65,000 people, according to IOM. Sanitation is becoming a major concern at many of the temporary sites.
