Belize City, 9 November 2010 – The Pan American Health Organization/ World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in Belize, along with other entities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), participated in a Drug Awareness Fair organized by the Ladyville Technical High School. Hundreds of students, lecturers, and staff, gathered at the high school campus, Ladyville, to learn about the dangers of the use of tobacco and other drugs.
In her presentation, Ms. Lorraine Thompson, PAHO/INCAP Technical Advisor, discussed the dangers of tobacco use and its contribution to the burden of chronic diseases in the country. She spoke about the prevalence of smoking among youths in Belize, and discussed strategies being implemented in the country to reduce the use of tobacco.
