The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in Belize called for a brainstorming meeting on the “Right to Health” (RTH) on 17 June 2009 at the PAHO/WHO Belize conference room from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The objective of the meeting was to determine strategies for strengthening the promotion of the RTH in Belize.
PAHO/WHO’s technical cooperation in this subject includes raising awareness of the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health (the right to health) and other related human rights, particularly as they relate to the most vulnerable populations. These include persons living with HIV, disability, mental health disorders, indigenous peoples, older persons, young people, and children. PAHO/WHO’s strategies on health and human rights have as an objective the dissemination and promotion of the international human rights norms and standards among community leaders, health service users, advocacy group members, ombudspersons, medical professionals, government workers, decision makers, and the public in general.
Belize is ready to strengthen this aspect of its national health development, and an important first step is sensitizing various audiences to these important issues. Belize’s Universal Periodic Review by the UN Human Rights Council in May 2009 provides an opportune platform for these efforts.
