Belmopan - 09 September, 2009
Belize will be joining other CARICOM countries in observing Caribbean Wellness Day on Saturday September 12, 2009. Local organizations and institutions will launch campaigns of regular physical activities for public participation to promote healthy living for prevention and control of non communicable diseases on Friday, September 11, 2009 in commemoration of the day.
The Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization has invited schools and businesses countrywide to participate in Caribbean Wellness Day activities in their areas targeting students, workers and the general public. These activities include Physical Activity exercises (stretches: hands up, touch toes, walk around the classroom) 10 minutes before classes and 10 minutes before dismissal; no junk food sold for the entire week at school; walk to work or walk from work encouraged on this day (casual day to support this - sneakers and slacks).
Some private organizations will be having a service station and a casual day to support walking to and from work. Public hospitals will be doing diabetic checks and will have a service station opened with brochures and fruits, and casual day.
Belizeans countrywide are encouraged to eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, monitor blood pressure and quit smoking – to be achieved through constant gentle practice rather than through drastic unsustainable activities.
The principal objective for observing the day is to create awareness and share information in regards to the prevention and control of chronic diseases as well as identify and facilitate strategies geared toward the reduction of social and environmental risk factors responsible for chronic diseases.
The observance of this day was one of the decisions taken when the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government, deeply concerned about the physical, economic and social burdens caused by lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart disease, obesity and cancer, met in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on 15 September 2007 to design a plan of action to stop the epidemic of chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
The theme for Caribbean Wellness Day is “Love that Body, Love that Mind”.
