Panama: depression and adolescence

A Central American subregional workshop on "Identification, diagnosis and treatment of depression in adolescents" was held in  Panama, March 6-8. It was coordinated by PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for Mental Health Training and Policy at Dalhousie University ( Canada). The workshop was facilitated by Iliana García Ortega and Stan Kutcher. The Pan American Health Organization was represented by Jorge Rodríguez, Senior Advisor on Mental Health, and Víctor Aparicio, Subregional Advisor on Mental Health for Mexico, Central America and the Hispanic Caribbean.

During the discussions, particular attention was paid to the integration of the mental health component into primary care. The prevalence of depression in teens and high suicide rates in this age group in some countries of the Subregion, justify the development of specific intervention methodologies. Professionals from Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica and Nicaragua attended the workshop.
