Guatemala: Sensitization and training on alcohol use prevention

null

On March 17-19, under the Joint Rural Development Coatan-Suchiate Program, PAHO/WHO Representation in  Guatemala, in coordination with the Executive Secretariat Commission against Addictions and Illicit Drug Trafficking (SECCATID), the National Program of Mental Health and San Marcos Health Area, started a sensitization and training process on prevention of alcohol use at community level and on how to approach alcohol use related problems in primary health care.

nullThis process consisted of two main activities, one was aimed at 45 community leaders from five priority municipalities of the department of San Marcos, and the second involved 30 professionals from 12 health districts, who were trained in the use of brief interventions for diagnosis and treatment of risk and harmful drinkers and to facilitate referral of severe cases of dependence. A group of facilitators was formed to replicate the process in other departments. The workshops were coordinated by Michaela Bitarello, Brazilian specialist with extensive experience in research and training on the subject.
