WHO-AIMS and mhGAP Workshop in Venezuela

The Ministry of Popular Power for Health and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) coordinated the "Bridging the Gap (mhGAP)" workshop, which was recently held in Caracas. The meeting pursued two main objectives: the incorporation of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the Mental Health Services Global Assessment System, for strengthening local policies through the use of WHO Assessment Instrument for Mental Health Systems (WHO-AIMS, for its acronym in English); and the presentation of WHO’s Mental Health Gap Action Programme –mhGAP-, for primary health care professionals.

Convened by the Safe and Full Life Community Program Coordinator, Angel Riera, it was attended by representatives of two local organizations –Grandes Misiones “Barrios Adentro” and “Negra Hipólita”-, as well as by representatives of the community councils, and regional mental health delegates. PAHO/WHO Subregional Advisor on Mental Health for South America, Hugo Cohen, made a situation analysis, described PAHO's key recommendations for the Region, and presented the WHO-AIMS.

During the event, teachers, sociologists, social workers, community leaders, administrators, along with psychiatrists and psychologists reflected on their daily work in the community. Their active commitment within the missions will undoubtedly be a stimulus to advance in the development of a more accessible mental health system.
