Argentina, June 22-26, 2009. Mental health system professionals from the cities of La Paz and El Alto, Bolivia, and from the Province of Río Negro, in Argentina, toured health services and community work units in the cities of Viedma, Choele Choel, Maquinchao, El Bolsón and Bariloche, all located in the Argentine province.
Both delegations held meetings with local authorities and with the Vice-Consul of Bolivia, Orlando Abastoflor. They discussed the structure and functioning models of the mental health services in their respective localities. The professionals also visited the province’s mental health network of services and met with representatives from the Mapuche community in Maquinchao. Together they discussed the perceptions of mental health in the Mapuche and Aymara populations.
In El Bolsón they participated in a meeting with hospital, community and local authorities (local health council) and visited two social enterprises: a mountain tourist ski parador and a catering company.
Both, the Río Negro and the
La Paz and El Alto teams, acknowledged PAHO’s efforts in carrying out these actions and agreed on the future steps to be taken within the framework of the technical cooperation project. These include the visit of members of the mental health teams from the Argentine province to El Alto and
La Paz, and a month long in-service training in Río Negro for people committed to community work from the two Bolivian cities.
