Panama: training in the use of mhGAP Intervention Guide modules

On August 3-5, Professor Raffaella Meregalli of Cittadino (Italy) coordinated a workshop to train 31 professionals (26 from Panama and five from other countries) in the use of the modules on depression, epilepsy and other significant emotional or medically unexplained complaints (OTH) of WHO´s mhGAP Intervention Guide for mental, neurological and substance use disorders in non-specialized settings.

This workshop is part of the pilot experience carried out in Panama within the project coordinated by the World Health Organization involving six countries worldwide. The Panamanian professionals mainly came from the primary care team of the health regions of Colon and San Miguelito. The workshop was attended by five professionals from Honduras, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Haiti who will disseminate this training in similar programs in their countries. The methodology used included group work, role playing, video discussion, case studies and theory sessions.
