El Salvador: advances in mental health

El Salvador’s “National Mental Health Policy” was officially launched in November 2011. The government is currently working on the development of a mental health law. As a result of the processes promoted by the health reform, the National Mental Health Program has opened new services in general hospitals and has improved existing ones. They are also planning to create three more mental health units in the eastern part of the country, at San Miguel’s, Usulután’s and Cojutepeque’s hospitals.

The traditional National Psychiatric Hospital Dr. José Molina Martinez is currently modernizing some of its services (occupational therapy and emergencies). Likewise, the addictions program is being strengthened with the support and coordination of FOSALUD (Health Solidarity Fund). A day hospital will also be incorporated in the Mental Health Unit of San Juan de Dios Hospital in Santa Ana.

El Salvador received support from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/ WHO) and from the Association for the Right to Health -OSALDE-, Basque Country, Spain.
