Honduras: training of primary care professionals in the use of mhGAP

During the first quarter of 2012, Honduras started the implementation of WHO’s “mhGAP Intervention Guide for mental, neurological and substance use disorders in non-specialized health settings".

The national adaptation of the mhGAP modules was finished between January and March. Fifty two primary care professionals of the Department of Comayagua received training in the modules of depression, epilepsy and other significant emotional or medically unexplained complaints. In addition, eight professionals from other Honduran departments also attended these trainings.

In April, at Puerto Lempira, 23 health professionals, GPs and nursing staff from the Department of Gracias a Dios (Honduran Moskitia) were also trained in the use of the above mentioned modules. Linda Gómez, Francisca Acosta -National Mental Health Coordinator-, Ángela Orellana -Comayagua’s Mental Health Coordinator-, and Víctor Aparicio, PAHO/WHO Subregional Advisor on Mental Health, acted as facilitators.
