World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD), sponsored by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and co-sponsored by the World Health Organization, is observed every year on September 10th. The 2012 international theme for WSPD was “Suicide Prevention across the Globe: Strengthening Protective Factors and Instilling Hope.”
To commemorate this day, Panama’s National Mental Health Program (Ministry of Health), in coordination with the Mental Health Intersectoral Network and PAHO/ WHO’s support, organized a suicide prevention training activity directed to secondary school students of the Instituto Rubiano, in Panama City.
The topics covered were: "Adolescent depression and suicide prevention strategies" and "Bullying prevention strategies." A "Concert for Life" was also offered at the National Lottery, a member of the Mental Health Intersectoral Network, where leaflets on suicide prevention strategies were distributed.
