The Ministry of Health of
Guyana, in collaboration with PAHO/WHO, hosted a two day workshop on the “Prevention and Control of Suicide Behavior” (September 7-8). The meeting, which was attended by the Minister of Health, was supported by the WHO Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse in
Around 30 representatives from
Trinidad and Tobago participated in the workshop. The countries selected are among those with the highest suicide rate in the
Caribbean. The objectives of the activity were, among others, to understand suicide as a public health problem and a global priority; to review regional suicide data trends; to critically review the evidence for suicide prevention; and to introduce WHO’s suicide prevention strategies. The participants alternated between plenary sessions and working group sessions aimed at the elaboration of a draft plan of action on suicide prevention for their respective countries.
In the closing remarks, the emphasis was laid on the need to finalize the plan of action in each country, consulting key stakeholders, and its subsequent implementation.
