|Meeting between PAHO and the Argentine Network of Families, Users and Volunteers of Mental Health Services|
At the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in
The meeting included, among others, representatives from associations of people with schizophrenia and epilepsy prevention, users of mental heath services, volunteering professionals, as well as the President of the Network. The meeting generally supported the consolidation of the Network throughout the country. Topics of interest were discussed, such as support for the sanction of the National Mental Health Law and the need to extend the organization of mutual aid groups in the Greater Buenos Aires Region.
Participants expressed their total agreement with the law because it could improve access to services that are currently lacking. They insisted on the need for inpatient facilities in general hospitals. Non-discrimination of patients with mental disorders would be a concrete sign of respect for the dignity of these individuals and of active defense of their rights as citizens.
