Victor Aparicio Basauri, PAHO/WHO Subregional Adviser on Mental Health for México, Central America and the Hispanic Caribbean received the recognition of Mirta Roses Periago, Director of the Pan American Health Organization, for his “exceptional leadership and contribution to the work of the Organization”.
Dr. Victor Aparicio is a specialist in Psychiatry graduate from the University of Barcelona; he earned his doctorate at the University of Cantabria in Spain. He held various positions along his vast career, namely: Director of the Provincial Psychiatric Hospital of Oviedo (1983-88); Mental Health Regional Director of the Principality of Asturias (1988-91); and Coordinator of the WHO Collaborating Centre -Mental Health Services Research Unit- in Oviedo, between 1992 and 1996. He was also a temporary consultant with PAHO/WHO from 1991, and with WHO-Europe from 2000, developing his work in Ecuador, Argentina and Kosovo. From 2006, he holds his current position based in Panama City.
He was Secretary General of the Spanish Association of Neuropsychiatry (1977-80) and President of the same association between 1986 and 1990. He was a member of the Board of Mental Health Europe on behalf of the Spanish Association of Neuropsychiatry. Until 2006, he was Chairman of the Asturian Association of Neuropsychiatry and Mental Health.
Finally, we ought to mention that Dr. Aparicio Basauri has been a collaborator and member of the editorial board of different publications (Clinical and Group Analysis, Journal of the Spanish Association of Neuropsychiatry, Primary Care and Mental Health) and Director of “Cuadernos de Psiquiatría Comunitaria.”
