Mental Health in Jamaica – a week of activities Print E-mail

The Mental Health Department of the Ministry of Health from Jamaica, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization, organized an intensive work week for mental health stakeholders. Maureen Iron Morgan, Head of the Mental Health Department, and Dévora Kestel, PAHO/WHO Regional Advisor on Mental Health, were in charge of coordinating all the activities.

During the second week of July, a number of relevant stakeholders from the national and regional level, gathered at different meetings with the aim of drafting a plan for mental health and psychosocial support in emergencies; receiving training in psychological first aid; and revising their deinstitutionalization plan as well as their existing mental health law. Four different initiatives, involving different professionals, were invited to be part of a process to ensure that mental health issues are up to date with sub-regional and regional trends and developments.
