Guatemala: Psychosocial support program in Santiago de Atitlán Print E-mail

Santiago de Atitlán’s Permanent Care Center, led by Juan Chumil, has resumed implementing their "Adolescent Health Program", an intervention model based on a set of experiences from post Hurricane Stan (October 2005).

The institutions that developed the model used a comprehensive approach, which involved human rights, gender and diversity, as well as bio-psycho-social care of the population affected. To this end, the city hired a psychologist and included mental health within the 2012 municipal public policies. They also created the Health Center’s Physical and Virtual Friendly Space, where sexual and reproductive health education, HIV/AIDS and mental health are considered the three pillars of care.
