Argentina and Canada cooperate to tackle health challenges.

Technical cooperation project financed jointly by PAHO and Health Canada to strengthen ties among countries and share experiences to solve health problems that are common to populations of Tierra del Fuego and Nunavut.

The southern and northern extremes of the American hemisphere are joining forces to seek solutions to common health problems. Through a technical cooperation project among countries of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), and financed jointly by PAHO and Health Canada, Tierra del Fuego, in Argentina and Nunavut, in Canada are working together to prevent diseases which affect these populations.

For this purpose, a delegation from the health sector of Nunavut, a territory which is located in northeast Canada, participated in a series of meetings and visits in Ushuaia with the governor of Tierra del Fuego, Ms. Fabiana Ríos, and the Minister of Health, Dr. María Grieco.

The three officials from the Department of Health and Human Services of Nunavut and the University of Nunavut shared experiences and lessons learned about different strategies designed to manage existing health problems common to the populations of both territories.

Topics included the health systems and services of both territories, human resources training, continuing health education, mental health, and chronic diseases, as well as a comprehensive look at indigenous peoples’ health, maternal and child health, safe motherhood, and the role of obstetrics, among others.

During the second phase of the project, tentatively scheduled for mid 2011, health officials from Tierra del Fuego will visit Nunavut.
