The summary of the main findings on the issues surrounding food security and poverty alleviation in the Caribbean discussed at the International Conference hosted by the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute is presented in this issue of Cajanus.

This issue of CAJANUS, and the next, will discuss the nutrient content and health benefits of some commonly used foods in the Caribbean. This issue focuses on: Staples, Legumes and Nuts, Fruits and Vegetables – four of the six Caribbean Food Groups.

This issue of CAJANUS highlights the efforts of several Caribbean countries that developed guidelines that will encourage the selection, preparation and consumption of healthyfoods. Because they focus on risk reduction and health promotion these guidelines are critical, not only to guide the general public but also to the development of food policy and nutrition education programmes.

The matters discussed in this issue strengthen the need for a multisectoral approach to health, food and nutrition problems, which overlap with many sectors - health, trade, agriculture, environment, marketing and culture.

EXTRACT This edition of Cajanus focuses on diabetes at both a Caribbean, regional through the Americas and global levels. Many times we hear it quoted that the prevalence of diabetes in the Caribbean is "high" but where are the data to support this claim? A few studies have been conducted within the Caribbean countries to calculate the prevalence of this chronic condition.
