The focus of this issue of Cajanus is the obesity epidemic in the Caribbean. The strategies needed to fight obesity in light of the dimensions of the obesity problem in the Caribbean are discussed extensively. The reported findings will inform scholarly research on the subject.

This issue of CAJANUS, and the next, will discuss the nutrient content and health benefits of some commonly used foods in the Caribbean. This issue focuses on: Staples, Legumes and Nuts, Fruits and Vegetables – four of the six Caribbean Food Groups.

This issue of CAJANUS is based on a report on food and nutrition security in CARIFORUM countries prepared by the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI) for the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in August 2007.

The information presented in this issue of Cajanus focuses on the care of adults infected with HIV and is available in the handbook for the nutritional management of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. Some of the articles included discuss the mode of transmission and the effects the virus has on the body, the importance of drug-food interactions and the precautions one should take with regards to minimizing these effects.

altIn collaboration with FAO, CFNI organized a symposium

which included several Agriculture Ministers and senior

agriculture and Food specialists in the region to identify clear

guidelines on how agriculture/food policies can impact on

obesity and NCDs through the availability of healthy foods, the

behaviour of consumers to make healthy food choices, and how

these in turn can stimulate growth in the food and agriculture

sectors. This CAJANUS issue presents the keynote presentations

of the symposium.
