Jamaica, St Vincent and Dominica (only in English )
In 1979, the Caribbean was hit by three consecutive disasters. In April, the Soufriere Volcano erupted, forcing the authorities on the island of St. Vincent to resettle nearly 20% of the population to the already densely inhabited southern section of the island. In July, floods caused major damage to Jamaica, and in September, Dominica suffered major damage as a result of Hurricane David. This report provides an overview of the most serious health aspects of these disasters, giving special emphasis to epidemiologic surveillance and the control of communicable diseases following disasters.
