Through training, provision of equipment and refurbishment of facilities, PAHO/WHO strengthens the capacity of the Departmental Committees for Prevention, Mitigation and Attention to Disasters (CODEPRED) in 12 departments of Nicaragua. These actions are aimed at improving the response capacity of institutions at departmental level to address public health emergencies and disasters that may occur in the country.

The Representative of PAHO/WHO in Nicaragua, Dr. Jorge Luis Prosperi, said that the provision of equipment and refurbishment of the Emergency Operations Centers aims to strengthen the response capacity of the committees, thus contributes to improve interagency coordination in a timely manner. In addition, he emphasized that it requires a vision that transcends the institutional to multisectoral in order to benefit the most vulnerable population and to be able to act effectively in an emergency.

Rafael Ramirez, the Executive Secretary of SINAPRED (National System for Prevention, Mitigation and Attention of Disasters), expressed gratitude for the support provided by PAHO/WHO and stated that the provision of equipment is very important for the prevention phase which is a priority of the Government of Nicaragua.
