Dominica Situation Report - 17 August

  • Dominica experienced high winds and rain; one fatality; some roofs were lost; damage to crops and some phone lines down.
  • The Princess Margaret Hospital (capacity 227 beds) is the only hospital in Dominica. It serves a population of almost 71,000 (2006 data). The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health confirmed that the psychiatric unit and the acute care unit suffered slight roof damage. The psychiatric unit was scheduled for rehabilitation. The Permanent Secretary also confirmed the death of a woman in a landslide. No other casualties were confirmed and the hospital’s accident and emergency department had a light day.
  • The Permanent Secretary, with other health staff, will conduct assessments and will provide PAHO/WHO with a report by late Sunday.
