Preparations for Hurricane Frances

In preparation for Hurricane Frances the Health Emergency Operation Center will be activated Wednesday evening. The Ministry of Health of the Bahamas conducted the first meeting of the Health Disaster Committee Monday afternoon and deployed two teams (physicians and nurses) to the southern islands. All departments have activated their emergency plans. Health protocols and instruments for health surveillance and needs assessments are being reviewed and/or updated and distributed to all facilities.

In Turks and Caicos Islands the national response is being coordinated through the Governor's office. The Health Sector preparations are completed, including the designation of emergency facilities in all islands.

The Royal Bahamas Defense Force reported that four advance teams equipped with emergency kits have been deployed to the southern Bahamas. The National Emergency Operations Center is activated at the Cabinets Office, Nassau.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has pre-positioned two disaster response experts in Nassau, Bahamas to support PAHO’s country office in case Hurricane Frances affects the health sector in the Bahamas and/or Turks and Caicos Islands.
