Update on the Response to the Christmas Floods of 2013 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia

A low pressure tropical trough brought heavy rainfalls to the Eastern Caribbean on December 2013, severely affecting health facilities and other infrastructure in the islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia. The attached report highlights some of the advances PAHO/WHO has made in restoring access to healthcare in those countries, with the support from international donors.

Hospital Administrator Post-Disaster Functional Checklist

The Post Disaster Functional Checklist was designed to be a simple tool that can be used by the Hospital Administrator or CEO, to determine if the facility is safe to continue operations and its level the functionality following an event. The Checklist is separated into three sections: Structural, Non-structural and Functional aspects of the hospital. It provides guidance when assessing the impact on the structure, lifelines, hospital equipment, medical supplies and staff.

Request for proposals - Health Facilities Safety Improvement

Improvement of Health Service Resiliency to the Impact of Emergencies and Disasters

PAHO/WHO is seeking to contract a suitably qualified and experienced consultant/firm to undertake work associated with health facilities resiliency to the Impact of Emergencies and Disasters related to the “Caribbean Health Services Resilient to Impact of Emergencies and Disasters” project, financed by the European Commission Directorate-General for Humanitarian Aid (ECHO). The project aims to improve the resilience of health services to respond to emergencies and disasters in the Caribbean.

The purpose of this request is to solicit competitive proposals for the consultancy advertised. Terms of reference is attached.

Deadline for submission of proposals is 6 September 2013 

 

Application of the SMART Hospitals Course

Health professionals, engineers, architects and disaster managers from several Caribbean countries joined together in the British Virgin Islands from the 11 – 14 February 2014 to discuss the vulnerabilities of Healthcare Facilities and their ability to withstand the impact of natural hazards and climate change.  The course highlighted initiatives to improve existing design and construction of Health Facilities in the region with specific focus on improving the facility’s safety and greenness.  It also gave a practical application of the step-by-step SMART hospitals toolkit and justification of its benefits.

Design and Implementation of Public Awareness Strategy
