What's going on in the Caribbean

Over the last two years, countries in the Caribbean have been working to improve the safety of their health facilities. As a first step, eight countries trained a wide range professionals to apply the Hospital Safety Index, a tool used to evaluate structural, non-structural and functional aspects of health facilities.  A total of eight countries applied the Index including Montserrat, Dominica, Grenada, Anguilla, St. Vincent, St Kitts, Nevis, and Barbados.

After applying the Hospital Safety Index, health facility managers were then able to create safety improvement plans for the hospitals and prioritize needs for making the facilities safer. Five out of the eight hospitals created safety improvement plans and some countries are already implementing strategies outlined in the plans.  Caribbean countries also trained senior staff in elaborating hospital emergency plans and a few hospitals carried out simulation exercises to test these plans.
