Start of the 2012 Hurricane Season Reinforces the Need to be Prepared

The 2012 Hurricane Season officially begins on June 1 in countries with coastlines and maritime territories on the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, and will last until November 30. The most affected region is usually the Caribbean where they also experience tropical storms, cyclones and floods. PAHO/WHO makes an appeal to review and activate the contingency plans for these events, which can cause considerable damage to the communities in the Region.

We can not avoid the occurrence of these events; however, preventive measures reduce the risks caused by these emergencies. That is why PAHO/WHO is working together with the ministries of health and strategic partners in promoting the necessary actions to prevent the loss of life and damages.
