|Vector Control and Dengue Prevention Seminar for Public Health Officers|
St. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2010 A five-day training seminar on “Vector Control and Dengue Prevention” began in St. George’s on Monday for public health officers attached to the Ministry of Health.
The seminar, whose resource persons include Brazilian vector control experts, is designed to strengthen dengue prevention and control programs in both countries. It is part of a Grenada/Brazil Technical Co-operation Agreement.
On Monday the participants from the Health Ministry’s vector control division, epidemiology unit and the division of community nursing were given an update on the Dengue Situation throughout the country by Epidemiologist, Dr. Alister Antoine.
That was followed by a presentation each from Chief Environmental Health Officer, Andre Worme, and Senior Environmental Health officer with responsibilities for vector control, Mr. Kennie James. In James’ presentation he outlined the operations of the vector control program, its key objectives, importance and benefits.
On completion of the five-day exercise it is the hope of Mr. Worme, that the skills and techniques of the vector control workers will be enhanced. Worme added that the workshop is very significant and timely as Grenada is responding to the threat of dengue.
The Chief Environmental Health Officer further alluded to the fact that by promoting training on dengue and vector control through the use of efficient and effective prevention strategies, Grenada can minimize the incidence of dengue.
Over the next few days the focus will be on the Entomological Surveillance in Brazil; its similarities to Grenada; and what strategies can be implemented here in Grenada to make the program more successful, since both countries have similar weather and natural conditions that are favorable for Aedes aegypti development.
