The Ministry of Health in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development and Pan American Health Organization concluded its second workshop held with Geriatric Care Givers who presently work at the Geriatric Institutions on Friday, 12th November 2010.

These workshops catered for fifty (50) Care Givers all together. They were exposed to the following topics:

  • The Overview of the aging situation (internationally, Regionally and nationally)
  • Factors involved in the aging process
  • Challenges associated with the Population Aging
  • Knowing and responding to the  changes on the body
  • General care of the Elderly
  • Mental health of the elderly
  • Nutrition of the elderly
  • Rehabilitation of the elderly
  • Work ethics
  • Interpersonal Relations

At the end of both workshops, the participants expressed gratitude to the organizations that organized and sponsored the training workshops and articulated the need for more training to improve their care for the elderly.  They also believed   that the workshop could have been of a longer duration and that more workshops should be held, as this would ensure that the quality of care to residents is improved both in the community and at the institutions.

The Coordinator for the desk of the elderly, Ms. Janet Sylvester has promised that this type of training will continue and that different categories of staff will be trained in the future. She also expressed satisfaction with the participants who show much enthusiasm and commitment to their job.
