ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2010 A series of consultative workshops aimed at improving the level of care and treatment to mentally challenged persons begins in Grenada tomorrow, November 25.
Discussion will centre on a new draft bill which seeks to guarantee and protect the rights and freedoms of the mentally challenged. However, the ultimate goal of the legislation is to modernize care treatment and practices that can better rehabilitate mentally challenged persons.
Among workshop participants will be health officials, relatives of the mentally challenge, and interest groups throughout the country, such as Friends of the Mentally Ill, the Royal Grenada Police Force and the local trade union movement.
The first workshop on Thursday will be held at the Ministry of Works Conference Room, starting 1:30 pm. The session is expected to be attended by Minister for Health, Sen. Ann Peters.
A total of nine workshops, facilitated by attorney Ruggles Ferguson, is expected to be conducted nationwide, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
The new draft legislation was developed with assistance from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
Grenada already has a clearly defined mental health policy and plan that will be used to guide the implementation of the overall mental health revitalization process.
