The team comprised two neonatologists, one nurse specialized in neonatology and one pediatrician specialized in cardiology. Dr. Jacqueline Bird, a pediatrician from St Lucia with recognized experience in community-based health initiatives, was also part of the team.

The team conducted the following activities:

Cardiology clinic (18 children were evaluated by the cardiologist)
Assessment of the Neonatal unit in order to determine: Training needs, equipment requirements and preparation of a plan for collaboration between Martinique, St Lucia and Grenada during 2011 and beyond.

The work of the team was highly appreciated by the Ministry of Health, both the doctors and nurse acknowledged the experience and knowledge of the doctors who conducted the training and assessment. They said although short they learnt a lot.  The visitors were also impressed with the level of care provided and the dedication of the staff, given the limited resources.

Minister of Health, Senator Ann Peters noted that “addressing the challenges of reducing neonatal mortality requires close collaboration among the Eastern Caribbean Islands”, she also thanked PAHO for this initative and said “ she is ready to sign on the dotted line to any collaboration that can be negotiated with Martinique, as she was only concerned with improving the quality of care offered to the Grenadian population”.
