ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2011 – More than three dozen young Grenadians will soon be exposed to professional training when the Ministry of Health commences its Apprenticeship Program later this year.

After months of designing and planning what can be described as a health skills apprenticeship program, the Grenada Health Ministry held a formal orientation and outlined the program to government officials within the Ministries of Education, Public Administration and Youth Empowerment, on Friday, September 16.

The program is designed to provide apprenticeship opportunities to young people with an interest in the field of healthcare.  “It will create career opportunities for dozens of young Grenadians, and a solid foundation on which they can build a lifetime public health career,’’ explained Sen. Ann Peters, Grenada’s Health Minister.

“By undertaking such a program,’’ she continued, “what we are doing is ensuring that there is continuity and an available skills-set by getting more and more young people interested in healthcare. So that a few years from now, there will be qualified healthcare providers and specialist right here in Grenada; and in doing so we are making sure that the future of Grenada’s healthcare is in safe hands.’’

Some of the areas to be covered in the program are likely to include Imaging (X-ray); Patient Relations; Laboratory; Environmental Health; Health Promotion & Prevention; Medical Records; Health Information; Health Accounts; and Health Administration.

During Friday’s orientation, Quality Improvement Officer in the Ministry of Health, Ruth Penny, gave an overview of the program, with specific focus on the benefits to the country, public health, and to the young trainees themselves.   She added that participants can also benefit from scholarship opportunities, which form part of the Apprenticeship Program. An official announcement on registration for the program will be made in the coming weeks.
