Launch of World Immunization Week in Barbados, May 4, 2012 PAHO Main Conference Room

The launch of World Immunization Week takes place in Barbados on Friday May 4, 2012, as a recognition of the role played by Minister of Health, Honorable Donville Inniss, and Chief Medical Officer, Dr Joy St John, in preparation for the World Health Assembly resolution on World Immunization Week.  This resolution will be approved in the upcoming 65th World Health Assembly Meeting on May 21-26, 2012.
 

Various Barbadian organizations are being invited, especially nurses from the polyclinics since they are the main stakeholders responsible for the success of the Barbados immunization program. The launch will have both a Barbadian and a Caribbean flavour; it will also convey recognition to the Caribbean countries for their achievements in immunization and prevention of vaccine preventable diseases. As such, Ministers from the following countries have confirmed participation - St Vincent and the Grenadines, British Virgin Islands and St Lucia; CARICOM has also confirmed participation and the Minister of Guyana has been invited. Mr Henry Smith from Belize, and one of the first EPI managers in the Caribbean, has also confirmed participation.

The launch is also organized as a way to strengthen the partnership between PAHO and UNICEF, the Representative of the UNICEF office in Barbados and OECS has also been invited.

The role of PAHO in supporting countries will be highlighted by the presence of PAHO Headquarters and the Caribbean Epidemiological Center (CAREC). Dr Gina Tambini, Area Manager for Family and Community Health will represent the PAHO Director and Dr Beryl Irons from CAREC will be in attendance.

The event will be streamed live on the Internet to the public in Barbados and the Caribbean in general via the PAHO Barbados website address http://www.paho.org/ecc .
