Update on the Availability of Pandemic Influenza Vaccine for Latin American and Caribbean Countries

Washington, DC, December 10, 2009 (PAHO)-- All countries in the world, and in particular those of the Region of the Americas, have faced the so-called “first wave” of the influenza A(H1N1) pandemic with highly effective, non-pharmaceutical measures such as education and social distancing; they have also used pharmaceutical measures (timely antiviral treatment).

Nurses preparing for second wave of Influenza H1N1

Nurses are currently preparing for the second wave of the Influenza A (H1N1) virus, while also enhancing their knowledge and skills in the management of the pandemic.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), yesterday started the first of two such sessions for nurses at PAHO’s headquarters at Dayrell’s Road.

1.  International Health Regulations 

  • Strengthen national disease prevention, surveillance, control and response systems
  • Strengthen public health security in travel and transport
  • Strengthen WHO/PAHO global alert and response systems
  • Strengthen the management of specific risks

2.  Communicable Diseases (CD) Surveillance (including Tuberculosis Surveillance) 

  • CD surveillance design
  • CD surveillance training
  • CD surveillance assessment

3.  National Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Plan 

  • Promote the improvement, continual update and implementation of NIPPP
  • Strengthen capacity to detect and respond to any Pandemic Influenza Virus
