The Regional Program on Tuberculosis of the Pan American Health Organization, Regional Office of the World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), with support from its Country Office in Chile and from the Institute of Public Health of the host country, will hold a meeting of the supranational TB reference laboratories certified by WHO for the Americas, from 6-7 December 2004 in Santiago, Chile.
Objectives
- Provide information on the Regional Program on Tuberculosis (TB), with special emphasis on laboratory operations in the Region of the Americas.
- Define the global framework and general guidelines established by WHO as priority areas of laboratory work in TB and determine specific areas for advancement in the Region of the Americas.
- Review and present a summary of the work of the laboratories currently operating as reference laboratories in the Region.
- Analyze and discuss aspects related to fundamental roles and functions of supranational TB reference laboratories in the Region of the Americas and define an organizational structure that will enable smoother workflow and collaboration among supranational reference labs, PAHO/WHO, and the countries of the Region.
- Agree on and define tasks, spheres of influence, and monitoring and evaluation mechanisms for all the reference laboratories in the Regional TB Network, both individually and collectively, concerning technical support to the countries of the Region.
- Discuss and formulate a joint proposal for the operation of the Regional TB Network, which will be presented for feedback from the countries of the Region.
