Every year in Latin America and the Caribbean some 200,000 people are diagnosed with tuberculosis, and an estimated 50,000 or more die as a result of the disease. Yet TB is curable; these deaths are preventable. We have the means to fight TB if we make a commitment. It is time to make the decisions that guarantee that treatment is provided for those who need it. And we must ensure that patients complete their treatment. The highest authorities have to commit themselves to these goals. Only with strong and active community participation we can improve the detection of cases and increase the number of people who can be cured. TB can affect everyone, without regard to age, sex, race or social status; but poor and neglected populations are particularly vulnerable to the disease. Reducing the burden of TB is one of the Millennium Development Goals, an agenda for promoting human welfare agreed upon by all the world's countries. Together, we can do it. Every breath counts.
