GFATM Overview

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) is an independent public-private partnership working to increase funding to fight these three diseases in countries with the greatest need and contribute to poverty reduction as part of the Millennium Development Goals. The Fund will support efforts in prevention, treatment, care and support of the infected and directly affected that complement existing programs and/or activities.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, several institutions are working together to support the submission of successful proposals for the GFATM. This page reflects a coordinated effort of PAHO/WHO, UNAIDS and the LAC representative to the GFATM board (Brazil) to share information about this process. It also has the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Meeting of the GFATM Board

5^th Meeting of the GFATM Board (5–6 June 2003), Notes for the Record: For the 3^rd Round of the GFATM, a new eligibility criterion has been introduced that is based on the World Bank Classification of countries, based on level of income:

All low-income and lower–middle-income countries can apply.
The following upper–middle-income countries may participate only in submitting proposals for AIDS:
Barbados, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago.
This excludes the following LAC countries from participating in the 3^rd Round:
Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Uruguay, Venezuela and many of the countries in the English-Speaking Caribbean, except for Jamaica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and—as mentioned above—Barbados, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago for AIDS projects.
