The Inter-American Coalition for the Prevention of Violence is the result of the common concern expressed by governments, citizens and international organizations working in this hemisphere. Established in June 2000, the Inter-American Coalition for the Prevention of Violence includes the following organizations and programs:
Injuries represent 11% of the global mortality and 13% of all DALYs (Disablility Adjusted Life Years) lost every year. Recognizing the magnitude of the problem, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recently taken important steps to increase its injury prevention activities. In March 2000, a Department for Injuries and Violence Prevention (VIP) was created. Its mission is to lead global action to prevent violence and unintentional injuries as major threats to public health. Its goals are as follows:
Andean Network for Violence Prevention / Red Andina de Prevención de Violencia
The Red Andina de Prevención de Violencia is coordinated by the Institute for Research and Development of Violence Prevention and Promotion of Social Coexistence (CISALVA) of the del Valle University, Cali, Colombia. Created by PAHO, it is now a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center.
