Mission: Support PAHO Member States in the surveillance, prevention, control, and eradication of zoonotic diseases and animal attacks.
Areas of Work
- Elimination of human rabies transmitted by dogs.
- Promotion of intersectoral and interprogrammatic activities in the areas of surveillance, prevention, and control of zoonoses and animal attacks in neglected populations.
- Surveillance and preparedness in the face of emerging and reemerging zoonoses such as zoonotic avian influenza, bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE, commonly called "mad cow disease"), and West Nile Virus (WNV).
- Conservation of neotropical primates; biomedical models for human diseases and vaccines.
