Access to antiretrovirals (ARV),
the drugs used to kill or inhibit the multiplication of the
HIV, is a global priority. But treatment is not yet reaching
most of people in need. This page contains information about
the Latin America and Caribbean efforts to expand access to
antiretrovirals. Among the highlights are the four subregional negotiations (Caribbean, Central America and 11
Latin American countries), in which the ministries of health,
with the support of PAHO, UNAIDS and other organizations,
managed to substantially reduce the price of these medicines.
In addition, this page provides several tools useful to expand
access to ARV, such as protocols, lists of drug manufacturers
of acceptable quality, recommendations on procurement and an
overview of relevant policies and legislation.
