New Approaches to HIV Prevention
A growing number of promising new hiv prevention approaches are in the late stages of clinical research, and have the potential to dramatically reduce the burden of hiv/aids around the world. Research on some of these approaches, such as male circumcision and diaphragms, could show results within the next two years. But there are serious obstacles that could significantly delay, or even derail, critical prevention trials — including inadequate resources and capacity to launch and complete trials, and emerging ethical concerns. Moreover, the world is unprepared to capitalize on the potential success of prevention research currently underway. Very little has been done to mobilize resources and develop the public health guidance, provider training, and public education needed to ensure rapid implementation of new prevention methods. This new report by the Global hiv Prevention Working Group, New Approaches to hiv Prevention: Accelerating Research and Ensuring Future Access, summarizes the state of hiv prevention research, and makes recommendations to speed research on promising new hiv prevention methods, and ensure rapid access to new tools and strategies as soon as they are proven effective.

Toward Universal Access to HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment: 3 by 5 Report for the Americas
As governments, organizations, and individuals strive to combat AIDS deaths and the spread of HIV, we must all aim high. The magnitude of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its potential to spread require high level planning and large scale action. When the World Health Organization and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS set the goal to treat three million people with antiretrovirals by 2005, it was with this aim to think big and achieve commensurate gains.

PAHO statement on removal of two AIDS medicines from list of prequalified products
Lamivudine 150mg tablets and Lamivudine 150mg + Zidovudine 300mg tablets, were removed by WHO from its list of HIV/AIDS prequalified medicines. As part of the ongoing monitoring and verification process, an inspection was later performed at the Contract Research Organization (CRO) that was used by CIPLA to carry out the bioequivalence studies. During this inspection, compliance with Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) was assesed. The CRO was found not to be compliant with GCP and GLO and the raw data failed to prove bioequivalence.

ARV Price Negotiations
This paper was presented at the 8th World STI/AIDS Congress, Punta del Este, Uruguay, in December 2003 and examines how the shift from a country by country approach in price negotiations to a sub-regional approach resulted in a rapid decrease in HIV/AIDS Antiretroviral (ARV) prices in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Know Your Status Initiative
This file contains the Know Your Status Initiative kit. The Know Your Status Initiative proposes a series of actions and tools aimed at increasing the public’s demand for HIV testing and counseling services. This initiative complements PAHO/WHO’s activities to support the countries’ efforts to strengthen and expand HIV testing and counseling services, within the broader context of the goal of universal access to comprehensive prevention, care, and treatment services.
