HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS VACCINES (HPV): A NEW TOOL FOR CERVICAL CANCER PREVENTION

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) estimates that annually more than 37,600 deaths are caused by cervical cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean.  The majority of these cases are linked to the genital infection resulting from the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).  Women between the ages of 16 and 20 generally have the highest rates of HPV infection.

Cervical cancer and the devastating impact it has the health of thousands of women globally was a central theme of the 2007 International Women’s Day celebration.  Particular emphasis was made on preventing HPV and protecting the health of all women, especially those in the most vulnerable groups.
