“Our son Porfirio loves football. But in the summer of 2002, his energy seemed low and he was tired all the time. The diagnosis was aplastic anemia, a potentially deadly disease in which the bone marrow cannot adequately make the blood cells needed to carry oxygen, fight infection and allow clotting. He needed many blood transfusions. Now our boy is back to his usual active and funny self! Blood donors save lives.”

"My daughter Carlee spent the first 98 days of her life in the neonatal intensive care unit. She was born 12 weeks premature, weighing only 1 pound 8.5 ounces. Premature infants like Carlee often require blood transfusions to help replace blood taken during the many tests required during their care. For a newborn, a transfusion of as little as one ounce of blood can mean going home to a healthy future ahead. Today Carlee is enjoying life as a three-year-old. I know that my little girl wouldn’t be here today, if not for the people who gave their time and blood.”

"I was involved in a serious automobile accident and was even declared dead at the scene. However, the paramedics were able to revive me and I was rushed to the hospital where I was immediately given six units of blood. During my surgery and recuperation I received an additional 19 units. Without that blood already in inventory, I would not be here today. I want to thank you very much for being community heroes.”

"I had a myomectomy. While recovering from the surgery and even before the anesthesia had worn off I developed a condition called DIC Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, which lead to severe bleeding over several days. During that time, I had to receive transfusions with more than 50 units of blood and blood products. Seven months later I am alive as a living testimony of the wonders of voluntary donors."

"Suddenly one day I got a very high fever, a headache, and a feeling of weakness. The diagnosis was dengue hemorrhagic fever. In a week, the fever subsided but I began to have red spots on my legs and hands, my skin turned purple, and my joints swelled from internal hemorrhaging. I received more than 200 units of blood and a similar amount of blood platelets. Thanks to anonymous blood donors, I survived."

“I a m hemophilic and for the past four years I have been going to the Nicaraguan Red Cross to receive factor VIII, plasma and cryoprecipitated to avoid bleeding. Every three moths I come from my home in Chinadenga because I feel that here they treat me well. I am so thankful that they help me to live!."
