Carlos Alberto Massad Abud was born in Santiago, Chile in 1932. He studied engineering and economics in the University of Chile and graduated with high honors. He obtained a Master of Arts degree (1958) and a Ph.D. in Economics (1964) from the University of Chicago. He has had a long and distinguished academic career teaching and doing research in the field of economics at the University of Chile, the University of Santiago, The University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), and the University of the Andes.

In addition to his academic career, Dr. Massad has been a consultant and coordinator of projects for the United Nations (ECLAC). He has served as Governor of the Chilean representation and Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund, Governor of the Chilean representation of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development of the World Bank, Executive President of the Eduardo M. Frei Foundation, and Chilean Minister of Health.

Dr. Massad has received grants from the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations. He has received awards and honors from Brazil, Italy, Uruguay, Lebanon as well as his native Chile. In 1999 he received two important honors, the medal of distinction "One Hundred Fifty Years of the University of Santiago of Chile" for his work as an outstanding national and international economist, and an award by the Federation of Chilean-Arab Organizations, in recognition of his significant participation in the national economic development.

During his career Dr. Carlos Alberto Massad Abud has written prolifically on macroeconomics, the international monetary system and international economic analysis, and has spoken at meetings and conferences worldwide. He is a member of the University of Chicago Alumni Association, the Society for International Development (SID) and North-South Round Table in Washington D.C., the International Economic Association in Paris, and the National Academy of the Economy in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Dr. Massad currently serves as president of the Central Bank of Chile in Santiago.
