Health System Profile of Honduras

HondurasThe health sector in Honduras is formed by a public subsector and a private sector. The Ministry of Health assumes the steering and regulatory role of the sector, formulates policies, supervises the operation of agencies integrating the system and, in general, guarantees the constitutional right to health protection. The Ministry of Health is a public law institution and its organizational model is characterized by centralized functions related to planning, regulation, financial management, and human resources administration.

Health System Profile of Honduras

The second edition of the Profile was prepared by a group of 45 professionals and high-level national policy decision makers from the Ministry of Health (SS), the Honduran Social Security Institute, the National Autonomous Water Supply and Sewerage Service (SNAA), UNICEF, USAID/PHR and PAHO/WHO. Technical coordination of the national group was the responsibility of the PAHO/WHO Office in Honduras. External review was entrusted to the Master’s Degree program in Public Health at the National Autonomous University of Honduras. Final review, edition, and translation are the responsibility of the Health Systems and Policies Unit, PAHO/WHO, Washington, DC.
