About GenSalud

GenSalud Poster

In honour of the International Day for Action on Women's Health (May 28th), PAHO's Women, Health and Development Programme is delighted to announce the launch of GenSalud - our new Gender and Health Information Strategy. We hope you'll join us in celebrating this important day by visiting GenSalud at http://www.paho.org/english/hdp/hdw/gensalud.htm.

GenSalud will gradually become a gateway to information about gender and health, specifically the ways in which the social construction of gender acts to restrict women's access to health resources.

Information is one of the most valuable tools we have for raising awareness and generating support for integration of the gender perspective into health policies and programs. One of HDW's priorities is the production, analysis and dissemination of information related to gender and health in the Americas. Below you'll find a brief description of the different components of the GenSalud strategy.

The GenSalud Electronic Discussion Group disseminates information on themes as diverse gender and development, sexual and reproductive health and rights, gener-based violence, qualit of care, health sector reform and management and many other gender equity and women's health issues. While it began as a discussion group intended to link HDW staff in Washington DC and the PAHO country offices, the listserv has taken on a life of its own and now includes members from international organizations, NGOs, universities and other educational institutions and government ministries from all over the world.

The GenSalud Virtual Library on Gender and Health is a referential database with close to 3000 entries that are subject to periodic certification and evaluation to assure their relevance and utility. We invite you to visit the database, make your selections and send us any publications which are appropriate for dissemination.

The GenSalud Gender Training Database will be a searchable registry of gender training and women's studies programs worldwide, inlcuding training workshops offered by NGOs and other groups, as well as women's and gender studies degrees and certificates offered by universities and other educational institutions.

GenSalud Gender and Health Fact Sheets explore a current theme in gender equity and women's health on a monthly basis. Examples include: Emergency Contraception, Men's Role in Gender-Based Violence and Gender and Ageing.

The GenSalud Gender and Health Curriculum. Beginning in 2002, the Women, Health and Development Program will be working with universities and NGOs in Latin America and the Caribbean to design a Gender and Health Virtual Learning Curriculum, which will provide online, distance training to health students and workers wishing to obtain certification in Gender and Health. Find out more about the GenSalud Curriculum.

GenSalud Gender and Health Indicators The Women, Health and Development Program has initiated the development of a regional strategy designed to promote and support the production, analysis, diessemination and use of gender-specific health information in the design and evaluation of public policy.
