Gender and Health Curriculum

Beginning in 2002, HDW will be working with universities and NGO's in Latin America and the Caribbean to develop and pilot the GenSalud Virtual Learning Curriculum.

The idea behind this initiative is to provide on-line (distance) training to anyone wishing to obtain certification in Gender and Health. The course itself will be made up of different modules, which can be taken individually or as a whole. The first module, which will be developed and piloted over the 2002-2003 biennium, will address health care providers' role in identifying and assisting victims of Gender-Based Violence. Subsequent modules will address:

  • The Gender Dimensions of Reproductive and Sexual Health
  • Gender and Health Sector Management and Reform
  • Gender and Mental Health

Each module will be developed and piloted separately. When the four modules are completed, they will also be offered as a more comprehensive Gender and Health Training Course. Depending on the success of the initial modules, HDW will then explore the possibility of developing further modules on issues such as: Gender, Health and Women's Labour, Gender and Communicable Disease (inlcuding HIV/STIs), Gender and Non-Communicable Disease (specifically heart disease and cancers), and Gender and Ageing.

The courses will be targeted to health students (public health, nursing, medical etc.) and health care providers (doctors, nurses, community health workers, clinic staff etc.) with the central objective of providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills to address women's health problems and concerns in an apporprate and effective way.
