Gender and Health Indicators

With the approval of PAHO's Directing Council, the Women, Health and Development Program has initiated the development of a regional strategy designed to promote and support the production, analysis, dissemination and use of gender-specific health information in the design and monitoring of public policy.

This regional strategy has three primary objectives:

  • Institutionalize a Gender and Health Information System (database) in the countries of the Americas, whose indicators will be effectively used in the design and monitoring of public policies which affect women's health;

  • Improve the production, analysis, dissemination and use of gender and health indicators and statistics;

  • Strengthen national capacity to integrate and use gender-specific indicators throughout information systems.

Some of the expected results of the project include:

  • A user-friendly methodological guide to the collection, processing, analysis, presentation, dissemination and use of gender statistics and indicators. The guide will be validated in selected countries before being widely distributed to the whole region;

  • Strengthening of government and civil society's technical and co-operative capacity in the production analysis, publication and use of gender and health statistics and indicators;

  • Creation or strengthening of National Gender and Health Databases, which are compatible with the regional database;

  • Political agreement and committment in each country on the institutionalization of gender and health statistics.
